This hat is a dupe of my favourite store-bought, machine knit, machine sewn hat. I could not find it anymore and neither could I find any patterns with the same solid structure and density. For the “store-bought” look, it is using fingering weight yarn and doubled in layer. No double knitting! I feel that this pattern is for those who do not mind spending a little more time than usual on a hat.

The Method

This hat will be knit from top to bottom and back to the top. This ensures a seamless brim and allows you to sew the 4 edges of the crown together for a sturdy structure and shape.

Some skills you’ll be practicing will be:

  • Making increases and decreases to the right and left and in knits and purls
  • The Kitchener Stitch
  • Recognizing stitches as you knit along

Sizes

  • Baby (child) teen (adult small) adult large
  • 40 (45) 50 (55) 60 cm or 16 (18) 20 (22) 24 inches

The hat stretches well between measurements. Size down or up if you prefer a tighter or looser fit.

The yarn used for the sample is Bio Shetland GOTS in Light Camel. It is discontinued so by all means find any light fingering fluffy yarn that works for you

These are just approximations. Total yarn usage will depend on the yarn, your personal gauge, and any modifications you may make.
